When I was young we knew our neighbors, we helped each other out and we were more about the community than ourselves. When my Grandparents were young the people of their time were all about helping each other and the community. Now days it’s all about getting the newest electronic gadget or the newest car. The focus has changed, it’s becoming more of a self-centered society than a community minded one. There is nothing wrong with taking care of your own and having some nice things in life but to see a neighbor in need and walk on by is a sin in my book. I try to remember if I had just made one choice wrong I could have been that hobo sleeping in the woods or the neighbor who lost everything in a fire. In a split second you can go from being prosperous to being needy.
There are still good and kind-hearted people out there, some still help others, some just got too wrapped up in modern life and forgot who and what they are. We all get lost in the madness and stress of this busy fast paced world of ours. We need to slow down if not stop once in a while to smell the roses and take a look around us. We need to get back to being neighborly and begin thinking with a community based mentality. We need to remember that needy person we just walked by could easily have been us or one of our loved ones. We need to reignite that fire of compassion and charity within our hearts.
Greed, Selfishness and fear are roadblocks to having a kind and compassionate heart.
