I am enrolled in a college class that is currently discussing the characteristics of effective communication. Because it is an online course, there is the void of seeing the speaker’s face, or hearing his or her voice. One of the things we were discussing was the fact that different people come from varying backgrounds, and therefore may “hear” things differently. Respect was stressed in the discussions.
Since I have gotten involved in the on line posting process, I have noticed how easily things can be misunderstood. Whether it be in humor, not recognizing who is in the “audience”, or just not realizing that words are powerful things that can hurt a person to the core.
I am reminded of the Scripture that tells us in Colossians 4:6:
“Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.”
